Gabriel Foretells John’s Birth There was in the days of Herod king of Judea a certain priest, by name Zechariah, of the division of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commandments and righteous requirements of the Lord, blameless. And unto them was no child, as Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in their days. Now it came to pass in his serving as priest in the order of his division before God, according to the custom of the priesthood, that it fell to him by lot to burn incense, having entered into the temple of the Lord. And all the multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of the incense. And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of the incense. And Zechariah was troubled having seen, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your petition was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear to you a son, and you will call his name John. And he will be joy and exultation to you, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. And he shall never drink wine and strong drink, and he will be full of the Holy Spirit even from the womb of his mother. And many of the sons of Israel he will turn to the Lord their God. And he will go on before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 1.17 Malachi 4:5–6 And Zechariah said to the angel, “By what will I know this? And after these days, his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying, “Thus the Lord has done to me, in the days in which He looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.” Gabriel Foretells Jesus’ Birth Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee whose name was Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the name of the virgin was Mary. And having come in to her, he said, “Greetings,1.28 Or Rejoice O favored one! And she cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And from where is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, as the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby in my womb leaped in exultation. And blessed is the one having believed that there will be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.” Mary’s Song (1 Samuel 2:1–11) And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit exulted in God my Savior! For He looked upon the humiliation of His maidservant. For behold, from now on all the generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One did great things to me, and holy is His name. The Birth of John the Baptist Now to Elizabeth the time was fulfilled for her to give birth, and she bore a son. And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord magnified His mercy with her, and they were rejoicing with her. And it came to pass on the eighth day that they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him after the name of his father Zechariah. And answering, his mother said, “No, but he will be called John.” And they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” And they were making signs to his father—what he might want him to be called. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue; and he was speaking, blessing God. And fear came upon all those dwelling around them. And in all the hill country of Judea, all these words were being talked about. And this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it was divinely revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he should see the Christ of the Lord. The Boy Jesus at the Temple And His parents were going every year to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. And all those hearing Him were amazed at His understanding and answers. And having seen Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, “Child, why did You do thus to us? But He, having passed through their midst, went away. Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit (Mark 1:21–28) And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbaths. And they were astonished at His teaching, because His word was with authority. And in the synagogue was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out in a loud voice, “Ha! What to us and to You, Jesus the Nazarene? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silenced, and come out from him!” And having thrown him into the midst, the demon came out from him, in nothing having hurt him. And amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together with one another, saying, “What word is this, that with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?” And the report concerning Him was going out into every place of the surrounding region. Jesus Heals at Peter’s House (Matthew 8:14–17; Mark 1:29–34) And having arisen out of the synagogue, He entered into the house of Simon. And Simon’s mother-in-law was oppressed with a great fever, and they asked Him concerning her. And having stood over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her. And having seen, Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus, saying, “Go out from me, Lord, because I am a sinful man.” For amazement laid hold on him and on all those with him at the catch of the fish that they took, and likewise also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And having brought down the boats upon the land, having left all, they followed Him. The Leper’s Prayer (Leviticus 14:1–32; Matthew 8:1–4; Mark 1:40–45) And it came to pass, in His being in one of the cities, that behold, a man full of leprosy,5.12 Leprosy was a term used for various skin diseases. See Leviticus 13. and having seen Jesus, having fallen upon his face, begged Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You are able to cleanse me.” And having stretched out the hand, He touched him, “saying, I am willing; be cleansed!” And immediately the leprosy went away from him. And He instructed him to tell no one: “But, having gone, show yourself to the priest, and offer concerning your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”5.14 See Leviticus 14:1–32. But the word concerning Him was spreading still more, and many crowds were coming to hear and to be healed5.15 BYZ and TR include by Him. from their infirmities. And He Himself was withdrawing into the wilderness5.16 Or desert and praying. Jesus Heals a Paralytic (Matthew 9:1–8; Mark 2:1–12) And it came to pass, on one of the days, that He was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting, who were come out of every village of Galilee, and of Judea, and of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was there for Him to heal. And behold, men bringing upon a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and to place him before Him. And not having found what way they might bring him in through the crowd, having gone up on the housetop, they let him down with the little bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. And having seen their faith, He said,5.20 BYZ and TR He said to him “Man, your sins have been forgiven you.” And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?” And Jesus, having known their reasonings, answering, said to them, “Why do you⁺ reason in your⁺ hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? But so that you⁺ may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins...” He said to the paralyzed one, “I say to you, arise, and having taken up your mat, go to your house.” And immediately, having risen up before them, having taken up that on which he was lying, he went away to his house, glorifying God. And amazement took all, and they were glorifying God. And they were filled with fear, saying, “We saw remarkable things today.” Jesus Calls Levi (Matthew 9:9–13; Mark 2:13–17) And after these things, He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” And having left all, having arisen, he began to follow Him. And Levi made a great banquet for Him in his house, and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes were grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you⁺ eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” 5.30 BYZ and TR their scribes and the Pharisees And answering, Jesus said to them, “Those being in good health have no need of a physician, but those being ill. I have not come to call righteous ones, but sinners, to repentance.” Questions about Fasting (Matthew 9:14–15; Mark 2:18–20) And they said to Him, “The disciples5.33 BYZ and TR Why do the disciples of John fast often and make petitions; likewise also those of the Pharisees; but Yours⁺ eat and drink.” And Jesus said to them, “Are you⁺ able to make the sons of the bridechamber fast while the bridegroom is with them? But days will come also when the bridegroom shall have been taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.” The Patches and the Wineskins (Matthew 9:16–17; Mark 2:21–22) And He was speaking also a parable to them: “No one having torn a patch from a new garment puts it on5.36 BYZ and TR No one sews a piece of cloth from a new garment onto an old garment. and if otherwise, he will tear the new also, and the old will not match the patch from the new. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. and if otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins, and it will be poured out, and the wineskins will be destroyed. And no one having drunk old wine5.39 BYZ and TR include immediately. wants new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’” The Lord of the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1–7; Matthew 12:1–8; Mark 2:23–28) And it came to pass on a Sabbath6.1 BYZ and TR the second chief Sabbath that He is passing through grainfields, and His disciples were plucking and were eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in the hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you⁺ do what is not lawful6.2 BYZ and TR include to do. on the Sabbaths?” And answering, Jesus said to them, “Did you⁺ not even read this, what David did when he was hungry—he and those being with him: how he entered into the house of God and, having taken the loaves of the presentation,6.4 Or the Bread of the Presence he ate and6.4 BYZ and TR include also. gave to those with him—which it is not lawful to eat, except only for the priests?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord6.5 BYZ and TR include even. of the Sabbath.” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:9–14; Mark 3:1–6) And it came to pass on another Sabbath that He entered into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees were closely watching Him, whether He heals on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him.6.7 BYZ and TR find an accusation Against Him And He had known their reasonings, and He said to the man having the withered hand, “Arise and stand in the midst.” And having risen up, he stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you⁺, is it lawful6.9 BYZ and TR I ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?” And having looked around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did, and his hand was restored.6.10 BYZ and TR include as sound as the other. And they were filled with madness, and they were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus. The Twelve Apostles (Matthew 10:1–4; Mark 3:13–19) And it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and He was spending the night in prayer to God. And when it became day, He summoned His disciples, also having chosen out from them twelve, whom He also named apostles: Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, and Matthew and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a betrayer. Jesus Heals the Multitudes (Matthew 4:23–25; Mark 3:7–12) And having come down with them, He stood on a level place, and a great crowd6.17 BYZ and TR a crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and to be healed from their diseases. And all the crowd was seeking to touch Him, because power was going out from Him and was healing all. The Beatitudes (Psalm 1:1–6; Matthew 5:3–12) And He, having lifted up His eyes to His disciples, was saying: “Blessed are the poor, because yours⁺ is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those hungering now, because you⁺ will be filled. Blessed are those weeping now, because you⁺ will laugh. Blessed are you⁺ when men may hate you⁺, and when they may exclude you⁺ and may reproach you and may cast out your⁺ name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap, for behold, your⁺ reward is great in heaven. For according to the same their fathers were doing to the prophets. Woes to the Satisfied (Amos 6:1–7) But woe to you⁺ who are rich, because you⁺ have your⁺ comfort in full. Woe to you⁺ who have been filled now,6.25 BYZ and TR do not include now. because you⁺ will hunger. Woe to those laughing now, because you⁺ will mourn and weep. Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:38–48) But to you⁺ who are hearing I say: Love your⁺ enemies, do good to those hating you⁺, bless those cursing you⁺, pray for those mistreating you⁺. To the one striking you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from the one taking away your cloak, do not withhold also your tunic. To everyone asking you, give, and from the one taking away what is yours⁺, do not demand it back. And just as you⁺ want that men may do to you⁺, do to them likewise. And if you⁺ love those loving you⁺, what grace is it to you⁺? For even the sinners love those loving them. Judging Others (Matthew 7:1–6; Romans 14:1–12) And do not judge, and you⁺ shall not be judged; and do not condemn, and you⁺ shall not be condemned; release, and you⁺ will be released. Give, and it will be given to you⁺. A good measure, pressed down, shaken, running over, they will give into your⁺ bosom. For with what6.38 BYZ and TR include For with the same measure you⁺ measure, it will be measured back to you⁺.” And He also spoke a parable to them: “Is a blind man able to guide a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone fully trained will be like his teacher. And why do you look at the splinter that is in the eye of your brother, but not notice the beam that is in your own eye? How6.42 BYZ and TR Or how are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, permit that I might cast out the splinter that is in your eye,’ yourself not seeing the beam in your eye? Hypocrite! First cast out the beam from your eye, and then you will see clearly to cast out the splinter that is in the eye of your brother. A Tree and Its Fruit (Matthew 7:15–23; Matthew 12:33–37) For there is no good tree producing rotten fruit, nor again a rotten tree producing good fruit. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good, and the evil out of the evil brings forth what is evil. For out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks. The House on the Rock (Matthew 7:24–27) And why do you⁺ call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I say? Everyone who is coming to Me and hearing My words and doing them, I will show you⁺ whom he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug and deepened and laid a foundation on the rock. And a flood having come, the river burst upon that house, and it was not able to shake it, because it was well built.6.48 BYZ and TR because it had been founded upon the rock; see Matthew 7:25. But the one having heard and not having done is like a man having built a house6.49 F35 his house on the ground without a foundation, on which the river burst, and immediately it fell—and the ruin of that house was great!” The Faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5–13; John 4:43–54) And when He completed all His words in the hearing of the people, He entered into Capernaum. And a certain servant of a centurion, who was valued highly to him, being ill, was about to die. And having heard about Jesus, he sent elders of the Jews to Him, asking Him that, having come, He might save his servant. And having come to Jesus, they were imploring Him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to whom You will grant this, for he loves our nation, and he built the synagogue for us.” And Jesus was going with them, and now in His being not far away from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not fit that You should enter under my roof. Therefore neither did I count myself worthy to come to You. But say a word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man appointed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does.” And having heard these things, Jesus marveled at him. And having turned to the crowd following Him, He said, “I say to you⁺, not even in Israel did I find such great faith.” And having returned to the house, those having been sent found the servant7.10 BYZ and TR the ailing servant in good health. Jesus Raises a Widow’s Son And it came to pass on the next day that He went into a city called Nain, and His7.11 BYZ and TR and many of His disciples were going with Him, and a great crowd. And as He drew near to the gate of the city, then, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only begotten son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd of the city was with her. And having seen her, the Lord was moved with compassion toward her and said to her, “Do not weep.” And having come up, He touched the bier;7.14 Or coffin, probably a wooden plank or open coffin and those bearing it stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise!” And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and He gave him to his mother. And fear took all, and they were glorifying God, saying, “A great prophet arose among us!” and, “God visited His people!” And the word of this went forth in all Judea about Him—and in all the surrounding region. John’s Inquiry (Matthew 11:1–6) And his disciples reported to John about all these things. And having summoned a certain two of his disciples, John sent to the Lord,7.19 BYZ and TR to Jesus saying, “Are You the coming One, or do we look for another?” And having come to Him, the men said, “John the Baptist sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the coming One, or do we look for another?’” In7.21 BYZ and TR Now in that very hour, He healed many of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and to many blind He granted to see. And answering, He said7.22 BYZ and TR Jesus said to them, “Having gone, report to John what you⁺ saw and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers7.22 A leper was one afflicted with a skin disease. See Leviticus 13. are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news proclaimed. And blessed is the one who shall not be caused to stumble in Me.7.23 Or who does not fall away on account of Me” Jesus Testifies about John (Malachi 3:1–5; Matthew 11:7–19) And the messengers7.24 GOC disciples of John having gone away, He began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you⁺ go out into the wilderness7.24 Or desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you⁺ go out to see? A man arrayed in soft garments? Behold, those in splendid clothing and living in luxury are in the palaces. But what did you⁺ go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you⁺, and more than a prophet. This is he about whom it has been written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.’ 7.27 Malachi 3:1 I say to you⁺, no one among those born of women is greater than John;7.28 BYZ and TR For I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater prophet than John the Baptist yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” And all the people having heard, even the tax collectors, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the lawyers set aside the counsel of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him. “To what,7.31 TR And the Lord said, “To what therefore, will I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: ‘We played the flute for you⁺, and you⁺ did not dance; we sang a dirge,7.32 BYZ and TR include for you. and you⁺ did not weep.’ For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you⁺ say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you⁺ say, ‘Behold, a man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’ And wisdom was justified from all her children.” A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8) And one of the Pharisees was requesting of Him that He should eat with him, and having entered into the house of the Pharisee, He reclined. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner. And having known that He is reclining in the house of the Pharisee, having taken an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and having stood behind Him at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and she was wiping them with the hairs of her head, and she was kissing His feet and was anointing them with the fragrant oil. And the Pharisee, the one having called Him, having seen, spoke within himself, saying, “If this man were a prophet,7.39 WH the prophet He would have known who and what kind the woman is who touches Him—because she is a sinner.” And answering, Jesus said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he says, “Teacher, say it.” “There were two debtors to a certain lender. The one owed five hundred denarii,7.41 A denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. and the other fifty. Of them having nothing to repay, he forgave both. Therefore7.42 BYZ and TR Tell Me, therefore which of them will love him more?” Answering, Simon said, “I suppose he to whom he forgave the more.” And He said to him, “You judged correctly.” And having turned to the woman, He was saying to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house; you did not give water for My feet, but she herself wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.7.44 BYZ and TR with the hair of her head You did not give to Me a kiss, but from which time I entered,7.45 GOC from the time she arrived she herself did not cease kissing My feet. You did not anoint My head with oil, but she herself anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you this: Her many sins have been forgiven, because she loved much; but to whom little is forgiven, he loves little.” And He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” And those reclining with Him began to say within themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Women Minister to Jesus And it came to pass in the thereafter that He was traveling through each city and village preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God, and the Twelve were with Him, and certain women who had been healed from evil spirits8.2 GOC healed of diseases, afflictions, evil spirits, and infirmities: Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna wife of Chuza, steward of Herod, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to them8.3 F35, TR, and GOC to Him out of their means. The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1–23; Mark 4:1–20) And a great crowd assembling and those from each town coming to Him, He spoke by a parable: “The one sowing went out to sow his seed. And in his sowing, some indeed fell along the path, and it was trampled upon, and the birds of the sky devoured it. And other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up, it withered because of it not having moisture. And other fell in the midst of the thorns, and having sprung up with it, the thorns choked it. And other fell upon the good soil, and having sprung up, it produced fruit—a hundredfold.” Saying these things, He was calling out, “The one having ears to hear, let him hear.” And His disciples were asking Him, “What may this parable be?” And He said, “To you⁺ it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest, it is in parables, so that, ‘Seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 8.10 Isaiah 6:9 (See also LXX) And this is the parable: The seed is the word of God. And the ones along the path are those having heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, lest having believed, they should be saved. 8.12 Or the seeds; also in verses 13, 14, and 15 And the ones upon the rock are those who, when they may hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a time, and in time of testing they fall away. And the seed having fallen into the thorns, these are those having heard, and, going along, are choked under the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not mature. And the seed in the good soil, these are those who, in a beautiful and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast and bear fruit in perseverance. The Lesson of the Lamp (Mark 4:21–25) And no one,8.16 F35 As He said this He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear. No one having lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed. But he puts it on a lampstand, so that those entering may see the light. And it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.” But answering, He said to them, “My mother and My brothers are those who are hearing and doing the word of God.” Jesus Calms the Storm (Psalm 107:1–43; Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41) And it came to pass on one of the days also that He and His disciples entered into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us pass over to the other side of the lake.” And they set out. And of their sailing, He fell asleep. And a storm of wind came down to the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger. And having come, they awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And having arisen, He rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and it became calm. And He said to them, “Where is your⁺ faith?” And having feared, they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?” The Demons and the Pigs (Matthew 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20) And they sailed down8.26 GOC And He sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,8.26 BYZ and TR Gadarenes; Tischendorf Gergesenes; also in verse 37 which is opposite Galilee. And on His having gone out upon the land, a certain man out of the city met Him, having demons. And for a long time he was not wearing8.27 BYZ and TR He was met by a man from the city who had been demon-possessed for a long time. He was not wearing clothing and was not abiding in a house, but in the tombs. And having seen Jesus, having cried out, he fell down before Him and said in a loud voice, “What is it to me and to You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” For He commanded the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For many times it had seized him, and he was bound, being kept with chains and shackles. And breaking the bonds, he was driven by the demon into the wilderness. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons were entered into him. And they were imploring8.31 BYZ and Stephanus TR he was imploring Him that He would not command them to go away into the Abyss. Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain, and they implored Him that He would allow them to enter into them, and He allowed them. And the demons, having gone out from the man, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. And those feeding, having seen what had happened, fled8.34 TR fled, went away, and reported it to the city and to the fields. And they went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons went out sitting, clothed and sound-minded, at the feet of Jesus. And they were afraid. And those having seen related to them how the one having been possessed by demons was saved. And all the multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Him to go away from them, because they were seized with great fear. And He, having entered into the boat, turned back. But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him to be with Him. But He sent him away,8.38 BYZ and TR But Jesus sent him away saying, “Return to your house and relate how much God did for you.” And he went away, proclaiming through the whole city how much Jesus did for him. The Healing Touch of Jesus (Matthew 9:18–26; Mark 5:21–43) And on the return of Jesus, the crowd welcomed Him, for they were all looking for Him. And behold, there was a man whose name was Jairus, and this man was a ruler of the synagogue. And having fallen at the feet of Jesus, he was imploring Him to enter into his house because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. And in His going, the crowds were pressing around Him. And a woman being with a flow of blood for twelve years, who, having spent all her living on physicians,8.43 NE and WH do not include having spent all her living on physicians. was not able to be healed by any, having come behind, touched the fringe of His garment, and immediately her flow of blood stopped. And Jesus said, “Who is the one having touched Me?” But all denying, Peter8.45 BYZ and TR include and those who were with him. said, “Master, the crowds surround You and press in.8.45 BYZ and TR include and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me, for I knew power has gone out from Me.” And the woman, having seen that she was not hidden, came trembling. And having fallen down before Him, she declared for what cause she touched Him before all the people, and how she was healed immediately. And He said to her, “Daughter,8.48 BYZ and TR Take courage, daughter. your faith has saved you; go in peace.” of Him still speaking, someone comes from the synagogue ruler,8.49 Or the house of the synagogue ruler saying, “Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer.8.49 BYZ and TR do not trouble the Teacher.” But Jesus, having heard, answered him, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be saved.” And having come into the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him8.51 BYZ and TR do not include with Him. except Peter and John and James,8.51 TR Peter and James and John and the father and the mother of the child. And all were weeping and mourning for her. But He said, “Do not weep; for she did not die, but sleeps.” And they were laughing at Him, knowing that she died. And He,8.54 BYZ and TR include sent them all outside, and. having taken hold of her hand, called out, saying, “Child, arise!” And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately; and He directed there be given to her to eat. And her parents were amazed, but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened. The Ministry of the Twelve (Matthew 10:5–15; Mark 6:7–13) And having called together the Twelve,9.1 TR the twelve disciples He gave to them power and authority over all the demons, and to heal diseases, and He sent them forth to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Herod Tries to See Jesus (Matthew 14:1–12; Mark 6:14–29) Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things happening,9.7 BYZ and TR include by Him. and he was perplexed because it was said by some that John was risen out from the dead, and by some that Elijah appeared, and by others that a prophet of the ancients was risen. And Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he was seeking to see Him. The Feeding of the Five Thousand (Matthew 14:13–21; Mark 6:30–44; John 6:1–15) And having returned, the apostles related to Him how much they had done. And having taken them, He withdrew by Himself9.10 BYZ and TR include to a deserted place. to a city called Bethsaida. But the crowds, having known it, followed Him; and having received them, He was speaking to them concerning the kingdom of God, and He was healing those having need of healing. And the day began to decline, and having come, the Twelve said to Him, “Dismiss the crowd so that, having gone to the surrounding villages and fields, they might lodge and might find provisions; for we are in a wilderness9.12 Or desert or deserted place here.” But He said to them, “You⁺ give to them to eat.” But they said, “There are unto us no more than five loaves and two fish, unless, having gone, we should buy food for all this people.” For they were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty.9.14 BYZ and TR groups of fifty” And they did so and made all sit down. And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, having looked up to the heaven, He blessed and broke them, and He was giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And they all ate and were satisfied; and that having superabounded to them was taken up, twelve hand-baskets of fragments. Peter’s Confession of Christ (Matthew 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–30; John 6:67–71) And it came to pass as He is praying alone that the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the crowds say I am?” And answering, they said, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen.” And He said to them, “But you⁺, who do you⁺ say I am?” And answering, Peter said, “The Christ of God.” Christ’s Passion Foretold (Matthew 16:21–23; Mark 8:31–33) And having warned them, He instructed them to say this to no one, having said, “It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day to be raised.9.22 RP to rise again” Take Up Your Cross (Matthew 16:24–28; Mark 8:34–38) And He was saying to all, “If anyone wants to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross every day9.23 BYZ does not include every day. and follow Me. For whoever may want to save his life will lose it, but whoever may lose his life on account of Me, he will save it. For what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, and having destroyed or having suffered the loss of himself? And I say to you⁺, truly, there are some of those standing here who shall not taste of death until they shall see the kingdom of God.” The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1–13; Mark 9:1–13; 2 Peter 1:16–21) And it came to pass about eight days after these words, and having taken with Him Peter and John and James, that He went up onto the mountain to pray. And it came to pass in His praying that the appearance of His face was different and His clothing white, flashing forth. And behold, two men were talking with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who, having appeared in glory, were speaking of His departure, which He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem. And Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep; and having awoken fully, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. And it came to pass in their departing from Him that Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles9.33 Or three shelters—one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he is saying. And in his saying these things, there was a cloud, and it was overshadowing them; and they feared in their entering into the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him!” 9.35 BYZ and TR This is My beloved Son; see Matthew 17:5. And on the voice having come, Jesus was found alone. And they were silent, and they reported to no one in those days anything of what they have seen. The Boy with an Evil Spirit (Matthew 17:14–18; Mark 9:14–29) And it came to pass the next day, on their having come down from the mountain, that a great crowd met Him. And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You to look upon my son, because he is the only begotten unto me. And behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it throws him into convulsions with foaming, and with difficulty it departs from him, crushing him. And I begged Your disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.” And answering, Jesus said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, until when will I be with you⁺ and bear with you⁺? Bring your son here.” And in his still coming near, the demon threw him down and threw him into convulsions. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and He healed the boy and gave him back to his father. The Second Prediction of the Passion (Matthew 17:22–23; Mark 9:30–32) And all were astonished at the majesty of God. But of all wondering at all that He was doing,9.43 BYZ and TR Jesus was doing He said to His disciples, “You⁺ let these words sink into your⁺ ears; for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” But they were not knowing this saying, and it was veiled from them, so that they should not understand it. And they were afraid to ask Him about this saying. The Greatest in the Kingdom (Matthew 18:1–5; Mark 9:33–41) And a reasoning entered among them, who might be the greater of them. But Jesus, having known9.47 BYZ and TR Jesus, seeing the reasoning of their heart, having taken hold of a little child, set him beside Himself, and He said to them, “Whoever shall receive this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever shall receive Me receives the One having sent Me. For the one being least among you⁺ all, he is9.48 BYZ and TR he will be great.” And answering, John said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we were forbidding him because he does not follow with us.” And Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid it; for whoever is not against you⁺ is for you⁺.9.50 BYZ and TR not against us is for us” The Samaritans Reject Jesus And it came to pass in the completing of the days of His being taken up that He steadfastly set the face to go to Jerusalem. And He sent messengers before His face, and having gone, they entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for Him. And they did not receive Him, because His face was going to Jerusalem. And having seen it, the disciples9.54 BYZ and TR His disciples James and John said, “Lord, do You want that we should call fire to come down from heaven9.54 BYZ and TR from heaven, as also Elijah did; see 2 Kings 1:10–12. and to consume them?” But having turned, He rebuked them,9.55 BYZ and TR include and He said, “You do not know of what kind of spirit you are. 56For the Son of Man did not come to destroy the lives of men, but to save.” and they went to another village. The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 14:25–33; John 6:59–66) And in their going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow9.57 BYZ and TR Lord, I will follow You wherever You may go.” And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere He might lay the head.” And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord,9.59 WH does not include Lord. allow me first, having gone away, to bury my father.” But He said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead; but you, having gone away, declare the kingdom of God.” And yet another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first allow me to bid farewell to those at my home.” But Jesus said to him, “No one having laid the hand upon the plow and looking to the things behind is fit for the kingdom of God.” Jesus Sends the Seventy-Two (Matthew 9:35–38) Now after these things, the Lord also appointed seventy-two10.1 NE, most BYZ, and TR seventy; also in verse 17 others and sent them in two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. And10.2 BYZ and TR Therefore He was saying to them, “The harvest indeed is much, but the workers few. Therefore implore the Lord of the harvest that He might put forth workers into His harvest. Go! And into whatever house you⁺ might enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ And if a son of peace is there, your⁺ peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you⁺. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things unto them; for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move from house to house. 10.7 See Leviticus 19:13 and Deuteronomy 24:14–15; cited in 1 Timothy 5:18. And into whatever city you⁺ may enter and they may receive you⁺, eat the things set before you⁺. And heal the ailing in it, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you⁺.’ But into whatever city you⁺ might enter and they may not receive you⁺, having gone out into its streets, say, ‘Even the dust of your⁺ city having clung to our feet10.11 BYZ and TR having clung to us we wipe off against you⁺; yet know this, that the kingdom of God has drawn near.10.11 BYZ and TR include to you.’ I say to you⁺ that for Sodom in that day it will be more bearable than for that city. Woe to the Unrepentant (Matthew 11:20–24) Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles having happened in you⁺ had happened in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you⁺. And you, Capernaum, to heaven will you be lifted up? To Hades you will be brought down!10.15 BYZ and TR And you, Capernaum, who are lifted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades The one hearing you⁺ hears Me, and the one setting you⁺ aside sets Me aside, and the one setting Me aside sets aside the One having sent Me.” The Joyful Return And the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I was beholding Satan having fallen like lightning out of heaven. Behold, I have given10.19 BYZ and TR I am giving you⁺ the authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and on all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you⁺. But do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you⁺; but10.20 TR but rather rejoice that your⁺ names have been written in the heavens.” Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving (Matthew 11:25–30) In the same hour, He exulted in the Holy Spirit10.21 BYZ and TR in the Spirit and said, “I acknowledge You, Father, Lord of heaven and of the earth, because You hid away these things from the wise and intelligent, and You revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, because of thus it was good pleasure before You. All things10.22 BYZ And turning to the disciples, He said, “All things were delivered to Me by My Father. And no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and the one to whom the Son may resolve to reveal Him.” And having turned to the disciples, He said in private, “Blessed are the eyes seeing what you⁺ see. For I say to you⁺ that many prophets and kings desired to see what you⁺ see and did not see, and to hear what you⁺ hear and did not hear.” The Parable of the Good Samaritan And behold, a certain lawyer rose up, testing Him, saying, “Teacher, having done what, will I inherit eternal life?” And He said to him, “What has been written in the Law? How do you read it?” And answering, he said, “‘You will love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’10.27 Deuteronomy 6:5” 10.27 Leviticus 19:18 And He said to him, “You answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” But wanting to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” And Jesus, having taken it up, said, “A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers who, having both stripped him and having inflicted wounds, went away, having left him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest was going down on that road, and having seen him, he passed by on the opposite side. And likewise also a Levite, having come to the place and having seen, passed by on the opposite side. But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came to him, and having seen, he was moved with compassion; and having come, he bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and having put him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And on the next day,10.35 BYZ and TR include when he departed. having taken out two denarii,10.35 A denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. he gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you might expend, I, in my returning, will repay you.’ Which10.36 BYZ and TR So which of these three seems to you to have been a neighbor of the one having fallen among the robbers?” And he said, “The one having done the mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, and you do likewise.” Martha and Mary Now in their going, He entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also, having sat down at the feet of the Lord,10.39 BYZ and TR of Jesus was hearing His word. But Martha was distracted about much service; and having stood, she said, “Lord, is it not concerning to You that my sister left me alone to serve? Therefore speak to her so that she might help me!” And answering, the Lord said10.41 BYZ and TR Jesus said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; but little is necessary, or one thing; for Mary chose the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:5–15) And it came to pass in His being in a certain place praying, that when He ceased, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” And He said to them, “When you⁺ pray, say: ‘Father,11.2 BYZ and TR Our Father in the heavens; see Matthew 6:9. hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.11.2 BYZ and TR include Your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth; see Matthew 6:10. Give us each day our necessary bread. And he, answering from within, may say, ‘Do not cause me trouble; already the door has been shut, and my children are with me in the bed. I am not able, having risen up, to give to you.’ I say to you⁺, even if he will not give to him, having risen up because of being his friend, yet because of his persistence, having risen, he will give him as much as he needs. And I say to you⁺: Ask, and it will be given to you⁺; seek, and you⁺ will find; knock, and it will be opened to you⁺. For everyone asking receives; and the one seeking finds; and to the one knocking, it will be opened. And which father of you⁺, if the son will ask for a fish,11.11 BYZ and TR if his son will ask for bread, will give him a stone? Or also, if he will ask for a fish; see Matthew 7:9–10. instead of even a fish, will give to him a serpent? Or also, if he will ask for an egg, will give to him a scorpion? Therefore if you⁺, being evil, know to give good gifts to your⁺ children, how much more will the Father who is from heaven give the Holy Spirit11.13 GOC a good spirit to those asking Him!” A House Divided (Matthew 12:22–30; Mark 3:20–27) And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; and it came to pass, on the demon having gone out, that the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled. And some of them said, “By Beelzebul,11.15 WH Beezeboul; Vulgate Beelzebub; also in verses 18 and 19 the ruler of the demons, He casts out the demons.” And others, testing, were seeking from Him a sign out of heaven. But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom having been divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house against a house falls. And if Satan also was divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you⁺ say I cast out the demons by Beelzebul. And if I cast out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your⁺11.19 GOC will your sons cast them out? Because of this, they will be your⁺ judges. But if I cast out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you⁺. When the strong man, being armed, might guard his house, his possessions are in peace. But when one stronger than he, having come upon him, might overcome him, he takes away his full armor in which he had trusted, and he divides his plunder. The one not being with Me is against Me, and the one not gathering with Me scatters. An Unclean Spirit Returns (Matthew 12:43–45) When the unclean spirit may go out from the man, it passes through waterless places, seeking rest. And not finding it, then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came out.’ And having come, it finds it swept11.25 WH unoccupied, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and having entered, they dwell there; and the last of that man becomes worse than the first.” True Blessedness And it came to pass, in His saying these things, that a certain woman out of the crowd, having lifted up her voice, said to Him, “Blessed is the womb having borne You and the breasts at which You nursed!” But He said, “Rather, blessed are those hearing the word of God and keeping it.” The Sign of Jonah (Jonah 3:1–10; Matthew 12:38–42) Now the crowds being pressed around together, He began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.11.29 BYZ and TR include the prophet. For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be11.30 GOC will be a sign to this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, One greater11.31 Or something greater; also in verse 32 than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation and will condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, One greater than Jonah is here. The Lamp of the Body (Matthew 6:22–24) No one having lit a lamp puts it in secret, nor under the basket,11.33 TH does not include nor under the basket. but on the lampstand, so that those entering may see the light. The lamp of the body is your eye.11.34 BYZ and TR the eye When your eye may be sound,11.34 Or When your eyes are good; see Proverbs 22:9. also your whole body is full of light; but when it may be evil,11.34 Or when they are bad; see Proverbs 23:6 and Proverbs 28:22. your body is also full of darkness. Take heed, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness. If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, not having any part full of darkness, the whole will be full of light, as when the lamp shining may shine on you.” Woes to Pharisees and Experts in the Law (Matthew 23:1–36) And in His speaking, a Pharisee asked Him that He might dine with him. And having entered, He reclined. But the Pharisee, having seen, marveled that He did not wash first before the dinner. But the Lord said to him, “Now you⁺, the Pharisees, you⁺ cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but your⁺ inside is full of plundering and of wickedness. Fools! Did not the One having made the outside also make the inside? But give as alms the things being within, and behold, all things are clean for you⁺. But woe to you⁺, the Pharisees, because you⁺ pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, and you⁺ pass by the judgment and the love of God. But it was necessary to do these things, and those not to neglect. Woe to you⁺, the Pharisees, because you⁺ love the first seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you⁺,11.44 BYZ and TR include scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites,. because you⁺ are like unmarked tombs, and the men walking above do not know.” But answering, one of the lawyers says to Him, “Teacher, saying these things, You insult us also.” But He said, “Woe also to you⁺, the lawyers, because you⁺ burden men with burdens hard to bear, and you⁺ yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your⁺ fingers. Woe to you⁺, because you⁺ build the tombs of the prophets, but your⁺ fathers killed them. So you⁺ are witnesses and consent11.48 BYZ and TR So you bear witnesses and consent to the works of your⁺ fathers, because they indeed killed them, and you⁺ build the tombs. Because of this also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ so that the blood of all the prophets poured out from the foundation of the world might be required from this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the one having perished between the altar and the house.11.51 Or the sanctuary Yes, I say to you⁺, it will be required from this generation. Woe to you⁺, the lawyers, because you⁺ took away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter, and you⁺ hindered those entering.” On His having gone out from there,11.53 BYZ and TR In His speaking these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began terribly to press upon Him and to make Him speak about many things, lying in wait to catch Him in something11.54 BYZ and TR lying in wait for Him and seeking to catch Him in something out of His mouth.11.54 BYZ and TR include so that they might accuse Him. The Leaven of the Pharisees (Matthew 16:5–12; Mark 8:14–21) In these times, the myriads of the crowd having been gathered together so as to trample upon one another, He began to say to His disciples first, “Take heed to yourselves of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. And nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. Instead, whatever you⁺ said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you⁺ spoke to the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops. Fear God Alone (Matthew 10:26–31) And I say to you⁺, My friends, you⁺ should not be afraid of those killing the body and after these things not having anything more to do. But I will show you⁺ whom you⁺ should fear: Fear the One having authority, after the killing, to cast into Gehenna.12.5 Or hell Yes, I say to you⁺, fear Him! Are not five sparrows sold for two assaria?12.6 Or two pennies; an assarion was a Roman copper coin worth about 1/16 of a denarius. And not one of them is forgotten before God. But even the hairs of your⁺ head have all been numbered. Do not be afraid; you⁺ are more valuable than many sparrows. Confessing Christ (Matthew 10:32–33) And I say to you⁺, everyone who will confess in Me before men, the Son of Man also will confess in him before the angels of God. But the one having denied Me before men will be denied before the angels of God. And everyone who will speak a word to the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but the one having blasphemed to the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. And when they bring you⁺ in before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how or what you⁺ may reply in defense, or what you⁺ may say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you⁺ in the same hour what it is necessary to say.” The Parable of the Rich Fool And one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide with me the inheritance.” And He said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or divider over you⁺?” And He said to them, “Beware, and keep yourselves from all covetousness,12.15 BYZ and TR from covetousness because not to anyone is his life in the abundance of that which he possesses.” And He spoke a parable to them, saying, “The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. And he was reasoning within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, because I have nowhere I will store up my fruits?’ And he said, ‘This I will do: I will tear down my barns and will build larger ones, and I will gather there all my grain12.18 BYZ and TR fruits and goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many good things laid up for many years; take your rest, eat, drink, be merry.”’ And God said to him, ‘Fool! This night, your soul is required of you; but what you prepared—to whom will it be?’ So is the one treasuring up for himself and not being rich toward God.” Do Not Worry (Matthew 6:25–34) And He said to His disciples,12.22 TH the disciples “Because of this I say to you⁺, do not be anxious for life, what you⁺ may eat, nor for your⁺ body, what you⁺ might put on. For life is more than12.23 BYZ and TR Life is more than food, and the body than clothing. Consider the ravens, that they do not sow nor reap; unto them there is not a storehouse nor a barn—and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you⁺ than the birds! And who of you⁺, being anxious, is able to add to his lifespan a cubit?12.25 Or to his height a cubit; a cubit in reference to time is a small unit of time; in reference to length it is approximately 18 inches or 45 centimeters. If, then, you⁺ are not even able to do the least, why are you⁺ anxious about the rest? I say to you⁺, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. But if God thus clothes the grass in the field, being here today and tomorrow being thrown into the furnace, how much more you⁺, O little of faith! And you⁺, do not seek what you⁺ might eat and what you⁺ might drink, and do not be in suspense; for all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your⁺ Father knows that you⁺ have need of these. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you⁺. 12.31 BYZ and TR But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things; see Matthew 6:33. Treasures in Heaven (Matthew 6:19–21) Do not fear, little flock, because your⁺ Father was well pleased to give you⁺ the kingdom. Sell your⁺ possessions and give alms; make for yourselves purses not growing old, an unfailing treasure in the heavens, where thief does not draw near, nor does moth destroy. For where your⁺ treasure is, there also your⁺ heart will be. Readiness at Any Hour (Matthew 24:36–51; Mark 13:32–37) Let your⁺ loins be girded around and the lamps burning, and you⁺ be like men waiting for their master when he shall return from the wedding feasts, that, having come and having knocked, immediately they might open to him. Blessed are those servants whom, having come, the master will find watching. Truly I say to you⁺ that he will gird himself and will make them recline, and having come up, will serve them. And if he should come in the second, and if in the third watch,12.38 That is, between nine at night and three in the morning and he finds thus, blessed are those. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief comes,12.39 BYZ and TR include he would have kept watch, and he would not have permitted his house to be broken into. And you⁺,12.40 BYZ and TR Therefore you also be ready, because the Son of Man comes in that hour you⁺ do not think.” And Peter said, “Lord, do You say this parable to us, or also to all?” And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful, wise manager, whom the master will set over the care of his, to give in season the grain measure? Blessed is that servant whom his master, having come, will find doing so. Truly I say to you⁺ that he will set him over all his possessions. But if that servant should say in his heart, ‘My master delays to come,’ and should begin to beat the menservants and the maidservants, and to eat and to drink and to get drunk, the master of that servant will come in a day that he does not expect and in an hour that he does not know, and he will cut him in two and will appoint his portion with the unbelievers. Now that servant, the one having known the will of his master and not having prepared nor having done according to his will, he will be beaten with many. But the one not having known but having done things worthy of stripes will be beaten with few. And of everyone to whom much was given, much will be required; and from him to whom much was committed, more will they ask of him. Not Peace but Division (Micah 7:1–6; Matthew 10:34–39) I came to cast fire upon12.49 BYZ and TR to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! But I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and how distressed I am until it should be accomplished! Do you⁺ think that I came to grant peace on the earth? No, I say to you⁺, but rather division. For from now there will be five in one house divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against the daughter and daughter against the mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against the mother-in-law.” 12.53 See Micah 7:6. Interpreting the Present Time (Matthew 16:1–4; Mark 8:11–13) And He was also saying to the crowds, “When you⁺ see the cloud rising up in12.54 BYZ and TR from the west, immediately you⁺ say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens. And when a south wind is blowing, you⁺ say, ‘There will be heat,’ and it happens. Hypocrites! The face of the earth and of the sky12.56 GOC, F35, and Scrivener TR of the sky and of the earth you⁺ know to discern, but how do you⁺ not know to discern12.56 BYZ and TR why can you not interpret this time? Reconciling with an Adversary (Matthew 5:21–26) And why do you⁺ not even judge for12.57 Or from yourselves what is right? For as you are going with your adversary before a ruler, give effort to be set free from him in the way, lest ever he should drag you away to the judge, and the judge will deliver you to the officer, and the officer will cast you into prison. I say to you, you shall never come out from there until you should pay back even the last lepton.12.59 Or penny; a lepton was a Jewish coin of bronze or copper worth about 1/128 of a denarius.” A Call to Repentance (Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Zephaniah 2:1–3) Now at the same time, some were present, reporting to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate mixed with their sacrifices. And answering, He said to them,13.2 BYZ and TR Jesus said to them “Do you⁺ think that these Galileans were sinners beyond all the Galileans, because they have suffered these things? No, I say to you⁺; but unless you⁺ repent, you⁺ will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and it killed them: Do you⁺ think that these were debtors beyond all the men dwelling in Jerusalem? No, I say to you⁺; but unless you⁺ repent, you⁺ will all likewise perish.” The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Isaiah 5:1–7) And He was speaking this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and he did not find any. And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree and do not find it. Therefore cut it down!13.7 SBL, NE, WH Cut it down! Why does it also render the soil useless?’ And answering, he says to him, ‘Sir, leave it this year also, until I may dig around it and put in manure, and if indeed it should make fruit in the time, so be it. But if not, you will cut it down.13.9 BYZ and TR and if indeed it may bear fruit—and if not so, you will cut it down’” Jesus Heals a Disabled Woman And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbaths. And behold, a woman having a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bent over and not able to lift herself up to the full. And having seen her, Jesus called her near and said to her, “Woman, you have been freed from your infirmity.” And He laid the hands on her, and immediately she was set upright and was glorifying God. And answering, the synagogue ruler, indignant because Jesus healed on the Sabbath, was saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which it is necessary to work. Therefore, coming, be healed in these, and not on the day of the Sabbath.” But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites!13.15 TR and GOC “You hypocrite!” Does not each one of you⁺ loose his ox or donkey from the stall on the Sabbath, and having led it away, give to it to drink? And this one, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound, behold, eighteen years, was it not necessary for her to be loosed from this bond on the day of the Sabbath?” And on His saying these things, all those opposed to Him were ashamed; and all the crowd was rejoicing at all the glorious things that were being done by Him. The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31–32; Mark 4:30–34) And He was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like? And to what will I liken it? It is like a grain of mustard that a man, having taken, cast into his garden; and it grew and became a tree,13.19 BYZ and TR a great tree and the birds of the sky lodged in its branches.” The Parable of the Leaven (Matthew 13:33) And again, He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven that a woman, having taken it, hid in three measures of flour, until it all was leavened.” The Narrow Door (Matthew 7:13–14) And He was going through by towns and villages, teaching and making progress toward Jerusalem. And someone said to Him, “Lord, are those being saved few?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door,13.24 BYZ and TR narrow gate because many, I say to you⁺, will seek to enter and will not be able. From that time the master of the house shall have risen up and shall have shut the door, then you⁺ shall begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord,13.25 BYZ and TR Lord, Lord open to us.’ And answering, he will say to you⁺, ‘I do not know from where you⁺ are.’ Then you⁺ will begin to say, ‘We ate in your presence, and we drank, and you taught in our streets.’ And he will say, ‘I am saying to you⁺, I do not know from where you⁺ are; depart from me, all you⁺ workers of unrighteousness.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth when you⁺ shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you⁺ are being cast outside. And they will come from east and west and from north and south and will recline in the kingdom of God. And behold, there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last.” Lament over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37–39) In the same hour,13.31 BYZ and TR On that very day some Pharisees came near, saying to Him, “Go out and proceed from here, because Herod wants to kill You.” And He said to them, “Having gone, say to this fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I complete cures today and tomorrow, and the third day, I am accomplished.’ But it is necessary for Me to proceed today and tomorrow and the following day, because it is not permissible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her, how often I willed to gather your children, the way that a hen does her brood under the wings, and you⁺ were not willing. Behold, your⁺ house is left to you⁺. And I say to you⁺, you⁺ shall not see Me until it will come when you⁺ say, ‘Blessed is the One coming in the name of the Lord.’” 13.35 Psalm 118:26 Jesus Heals a Man with Dropsy And it came to pass, in His going into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, that they were watching Him. And behold, there was a certain man with dropsy before Him. And answering, Jesus spoke to the lawyers and to the Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?14.3 BYZ and TR do not include or not.” But they were silent. And having taken hold of him, He healed him and let him go. And He said to them, “Which of you⁺ whose son14.5 TR donkey or ox will fall into a well will not also immediately pull him up on the day of the Sabbath?” And they were not able to reply to these things. The Parable of the Guests And He was speaking a parable to those invited, remarking how they were choosing out the first places, saying to them, “When you are invited by anyone to the wedding feasts, do not recline in the first place, lest ever one more honorable than you may have been invited by him. And the one having invited you and him, having come, will say to you, ‘Give to this one the place,’ and then you should begin with shame to take the last place. But when you are invited, having gone, recline in the last place, so that when the one having invited you might come, he will say to you, ‘Friend, come up higher.’14.10 See Proverbs 25:7. Then glory will be to you before all those reclining14.10 BYZ and TR before those reclining with you. For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.” And also He was saying to the one having invited Him, “When you may make a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives nor rich neighbors, lest ever they should also invite you in return, and repayment be made to you. But when you may make a feast, call the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they have nothing to repay you. For it will be repaid to you in the resurrection of the righteous.” The Parable of the Banquet (Matthew 22:1–14) And one of those reclining with Him, having heard these things, said to Him, “Blessed is anyone who will eat bread14.15 Or who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.” But He said to him, “A certain man was preparing a great supper, and he called many. And he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, ‘Come, because now it is ready.14.17 BYZ and TR everything is now ready’ And all with one voice began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I have need of going out to see14.18 BYZ and TR I need to go out and see it. I ask you, have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I request of you, have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I married a wife, and because of this I am not able to come.’ And having come, the servant reported14.21 BYZ and TR The servant returned and reported these things to his master. Then, having become angry, the master of the house said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.14.21 BYZ and TR lame and blind’ And the servant said, ‘Lord, what you commanded has been done,14.22 BYZ and TR it has been done as you commanded and there is still room.’ And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the roads and hedges and compel them to enter, so that my house may be filled. For I say to you⁺ that not one of those men having been called will taste my supper.14.24 RP includes For many are called, but few are chosen.’” The Cost of Discipleship (Matthew 8:18–22; Luke 9:57–62; John 6:59–66) And great crowds were going with Him, and having turned, He said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and yes, even his life, he is not able to be My disciple. Whoever does not carry his cross and come after Me is not able to be My disciple. For which of you⁺, wanting to build a tower, does not first, having sat down, count the cost, whether he has the things for its completion, lest ever, of him having laid its foundation and not being able to finish, all seeing it may begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? Or what king proceeding to engage with another king in war will not,14.31 BYZ and TR does not having sat down, first take counsel, whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one coming against him with twenty thousand? And if not, in his being still far off, having sent a delegation, he asks for peace. So therefore, every one of you⁺ who does not take leave of all that he himself possesses is not able to be My disciple. Good Salt (Matthew 5:13–16; Mark 9:49–50) Therefore the salt is good, but if even the salt should become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? It is fit neither for soil nor for manure; they cast it out. The one having ears to hear, let him hear.” The Parable of the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:10–14) Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were drawing near to Him to hear Him. And both the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” And He spoke to them this parable, saying, “What man of you⁺, having a hundred sheep and having lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness15.4 Or desert and go after the lost one until he should find it? And having found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And having come to the house, he calls together the friends and the neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I found my sheep, the lost one!’ I say to you⁺ that thus there will be joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, rather than over ninety-nine righteous ones who have no need of repentance. The Parable of the Lost Coin Or what woman having ten drachmas,15.8 Or ten silver coins, each worth about a day’s wages if she should lose one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek carefully until she should find it? And having found it, she calls together the friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I found the drachma that I lost.’ Thus, I say to you⁺, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner repenting.” The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Deuteronomy 21:18–21) And He said, “A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to the father, ‘Father, give to me the portion of the substance falling to me.’ And he divided the livelihood between them. And after not many days, the younger son, having gathered together all, went away into a far country, and there he scattered his substance living prodigally. But on his having spent all, there was a strong famine throughout that country, and he began to lack. And having gone, he joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was desiring to fill his belly15.16 NA, TH, and WH desiring to be filled from the pods that the pigs were eating, and no one was giving to him. But having come to himself, he was saying, ‘How many hired men of my father have an abundance of loaves, but here I am15.17 BYZ and TR but I am perishing with hunger?15.17 Or starving to death Having risen up, I will go to my father and I will say to him, “Father, I sinned against heaven and before you; no longer am I worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired men.”’ And having risen up, he went to his father. But on his still being distant, his father saw him and was moved with compassion, and having run, he fell upon his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I sinned against heaven and before you; no longer am I worthy to be called your son.15.21 WH includes Make me like one of your hired men; see verse 19.’ And the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly15.22 BYZ and TR do not include Quickly. bring out the best robe and clothe him, and give a ring for his hand and sandals for his feet; and having brought the fattened calf, kill it, and having eaten, let us be merry, because this son of mine was dead and lived again! He was lost and was found!’ And they began to be merry. And his elder son was in the field; and as, coming, he drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And having summoned one of the15.26 Stephanus TR his servants, he was inquiring what these things might be. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father killed the fattened calf, because he received him back in good health.’ But he was angry and was not willing to go in. And his father, having gone, was imploring him. But answering, he said to his father, ‘Behold, so many years I serve you, and never did I transgress a commandment of yours, and never did you give to me a young goat so that I might be merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, the one having devoured your living with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ And he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours⁺. But it was fitting to be merry and to rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and lived again; and he was lost and was found.’” The Parable of the Shrewd Manager Now He was also saying to the disciples,16.1 BYZ and TR His disciples “There was a certain rich man who had a manager, and this one was accused to him as wasting his possessions. And having called him, he said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give the account of your management, for you are not able to manage any longer.’ And the manager said in himself, ‘What shall I do, because my master is taking away the management from me? I have no strength to dig; I am ashamed to beg. I have known what I shall do, so that when I shall have been removed from the management, they might receive me into their houses.’ And having summoned each one of the debtors of his master, he was saying to the first, ‘How much do you owe to my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred baths of oil.’16.6 Or ‘A hundred measures of olive oil’; that is, approximately 870 gallons or 3,300 liters And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and having sat down quickly, write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred cors of wheat.’16.7 Or ‘A hundred measures of wheat’; that is, approximately 1,000 bushels or 35,000 liters (probably about 30 tons or 27 metric tons of wheat) He says to him, ‘Take your bill and write eighty.’ And the master praised the unrighteous manager because he acted shrewdly, because the sons of this age are more shrewd than the sons of the light in their own generation. And I say to you⁺, make friends for yourselves by the mammon of unrighteousness, so that when it fails,16.9 BYZ and TR when you fail they might receive you⁺ into the eternal dwellings. The one faithful in very little is also faithful in much, and the one unrighteous in very little is also unrighteous in much. If, therefore, you⁺ were not faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you⁺ the true? And if you⁺ were not faithful in that which is of another, who will give to you⁺ that which is your own? No servant is able to serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and he will love the other, or he will hold to the one and he will despise the other. You⁺ are not able to serve God and mammon.” The Law and the Prophets Now the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things, and they were ridiculing Him. And He said to them, “You⁺ are the ones justifying themselves before men, but God knows your⁺ hearts, because that which is high among men is an abomination before God. The Law and the Prophets were until John. From then, the kingdom of God is proclaimed as good news, and everyone presses into it.16.16 Or everyone is urged to enter into it But it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away than one stroke of a letter of the Law to fall. Everyone sending away his wife and marrying another commits adultery. And the one marrying her sent away from a husband, he commits adultery. 16.18 BYZ and TR anyone marrying The Rich Man and Lazarus (John 5:39–47) And there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, being merry in splendor every day. And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, being full of sores and desiring to be fed from that falling16.21 BYZ and TR from the crumbs that fell from the table of the rich man; but even the dogs, coming, were licking his sores. And it came to pass that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels into the bosom of Abraham.16.22 Or to Abraham's side; similarly in verse 23 And the rich man also died and was buried. And in Hades, having lifted up his eyes, being in torment, he sees Abraham from afar and Lazarus in his bosom. And having cried out, he said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus so that he might dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you fully received your good things in your life, and Lazarus likewise the evil things. But now he is comforted here,16.25 F35 does not include here. and you are suffering. And besides all these things, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you⁺, so that those desiring to go over from here to you⁺ are not able, nor may they cross over from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I ask you, father, that you might send him to the house of my father— for I have five brothers—that he might warn them so that they might not also come to this place of torment.’ But Abraham says, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if one from the dead should go to them, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, not even will they be persuaded if one should rise out from the dead.’” Temptations and Trespasses (Matthew 18:6–9; Mark 9:42–48) And He said to His disciples,17.1 BYZ and TR the disciples “It is impossible for the stumbling blocks not to come, but woe to him through whom they come! It is better for him if a millstone17.2 BYZ and TR a large millstone is put around his neck and he is thrown into the sea than that he might cause to stumble one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves: If your brother should sin,17.3 BYZ and TR include against you. rebuke him; and if he should repent, forgive him. And if he should sin against you seven times in the day, and seven times17.4 BYZ and TR include in that day. he should return to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you will forgive him.” The Power of Faith (Matthew 17:19–20) And the apostles said to the Lord, “Add to our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you⁺ have faith as a grain of mustard, you⁺ would have said to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,’ and it would have obeyed you⁺. And which of you⁺ having a servant plowing or shepherding, the one having come in out of the field, will say to him,17.7 BYZ and TR will say ‘Having come, immediately recline’? But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare what I may eat, and having girded yourself about, serve me while I eat and drink; and after these things you will eat and drink’? Does he have favor to the servant because he did the things having been directed?17.9 BYZ and TR include I think not. Thus also you⁺, when you⁺ may have done all the things having been directed you⁺, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have done that which we were obligated to do.’” The Ten Lepers (2 Kings 5:1–14) And it came to pass, in His going to Jerusalem, that He was passing through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And on His entering into a certain village, ten leprous men17.12 Or lepers; a leper was one afflicted with a skin disease. See Leviticus 13. met Him, who stood afar off. And they lifted up their voice, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” And having seen, He said to them, “Having gone, show yourselves to the priests.”17.14 See Leviticus 14:1–32. And it came to pass, in their going, that they were cleansed. And one of them, having seen that he was healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. And having answered, Jesus said, “Were not the ten cleansed? But where are the nine? Was there found none having returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” And He said to him, “Having risen up, go; your faith has saved you!”17.19 Or has made you well The Coming of the Kingdom (Genesis 19:24–29) And having been questioned by the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God is coming, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation, nor will they say, ‘Behold, here,’ or, ‘There.’ For behold, the kingdom of God is in your⁺ midst.”17.21 Or within you or within your grasp And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you⁺ will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you⁺ will not see it. And they will say to you⁺, ‘Behold, there,’ or, ‘Behold, here.’ you⁺ should not go away, nor should you⁺ pursue. For just as the lightning shines, flashing from the one end of the sky to the other end of the sky, so will be the Son of Man in His day.17.24 WH does not include in His day. But first it is necessary for Him to suffer many things and to be rejected by this generation. And just as it came to pass in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man: They were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until that day Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, just as it came to pass in the days of Lot: They were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building, and in that day Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from heaven and destroyed all. According to the same things it will be in that day the Son of Man is revealed. In that day, the one who will be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not come down to take them away; and likewise the one in the field, let him not return to the things behind. Remember the wife of Lot! Whoever may seek to keep17.33 BYZ and TR to save his life will lose it; but whoever may lose it will preserve it. I say to you⁺, in that night there will be two upon one bed: The one will be taken, and the other will be left. And answering, they say to Him, “Where, Lord?” And He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will be gathered together.” The Parable of the Persistent Widow And He was speaking a parable to them that it is necessary for them18.1 BYZ and TR And He was also speaking to them a parable that it is necessary always to pray and not to grow fainthearted, saying, “There was a certain judge in a certain city, not fearing God and not respecting man. And there was a widow in that city, and she was coming to him, saying, ‘Avenge me from my adversary.’ And he was not willing for a time, but after these things he said in himself, ‘Even if I do not fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow causes me trouble, I will avenge her, so that coming until the end, she does not exhaust me.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And shall not God execute the avenging of His chosen—the ones crying out to Him day and night—and be deferring in regard to them? I say to you⁺ that He will execute their avenging in quickness. Nevertheless, the Son of Man having come, will He find the faith on the earth?” The Pharisee and the Tax Collector And He also spoke this parable to some trusting in themselves that they are righteous, and despising others: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, having stood, was praying toward himself18.11 Or stood by himself and prayed thus: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of the men—swindlers, unrighteous, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice in the week; I tithe all things, as many as I gain.’ But the tax collector, standing afar off, was not even willing to lift up the eyes to heaven, but was striking his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ I say to you⁺, this one went down to his house justified, rather than that one. For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, but the one humbling himself will be exalted.” Jesus Blesses the Children (Matthew 19:13–15; Mark 10:13–16) And they were bringing the infants also to Him so that He might touch them; but having seen, the disciples were rebuking them. But Jesus summoned them, saying, “Permit the little children to come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of the such is the kingdom of God. Truly I say to you⁺, whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall never enter into it.” The Rich Young Ruler (Matthew 19:16–30; Mark 10:17–31) And a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, having done what will I inherit eternal life?” But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One—God. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother.’” 18.20 Exodus 20:12–16; Deuteronomy 5:16–20 And he said, “All these I kept from my youth.” And having heard, Jesus said to him, “Still one thing to you is lacking: Sell all, as much as you have, and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in the heavens; and come, follow Me.” But having heard these things, he became very sorrowful; for he was exceedingly rich. And Jesus, having seen him, having become sorrowful,18.24 Or having seen the man's sadness; SBL, NE, and WH having seen him said, “How difficultly those having riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.” And those having heard said, “And who is able to be saved?” And He said, “The things impossible with men are possible with God.” And Peter said, “Behold, we, having left our own,18.28 Or all we had; BYZ and TR left all followed You.” And He said to them, “Truly I say to you⁺ that there is no one who left house or wife or brothers or parents18.29 BYZ and TR house or parents or brothers or wife or children for the sake of the kingdom of God who shall not receive back manifold more in this time, and in the age that is coming, eternal life.” The Third Prediction of the Passion (Matthew 20:17–19; Mark 10:32–34) And having taken aside the Twelve, He said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things having been written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be betrayed to the Gentiles and will be mocked and will be insulted and will be spit upon. And having flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise again.” And they understood none of these things, and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not know the things being spoken. Jesus Heals a Blind Beggar (Matthew 20:29–34; Mark 10:46–52) And it came to pass, in His drawing near to Jericho, that a certain blind man was sitting beside the road, begging. And having heard a crowd going by, he was asking what this might be. And they told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he called out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those going before were rebuking him, that he should be silent. But much more he was crying out, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And having stood, Jesus commanded him to be brought to Him. And on his having drawn near, He questioned him, “What do you desire that I may do for you?” And he said, “Lord, that I may receive sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight! Your faith has saved you.” And immediately he received his sight, and he was following Him, glorifying God. And all the people, having seen it, gave praise to God. Jesus and Zacchaeus (Numbers 5:5–10) And having entered, He was passing through Jericho. And behold, a man called by the name Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he was seeking to see Jesus, who He is. And he was not able on account of the crowd, because he was small in stature. And having run ahead to the front, he went up on a sycamore-fig tree so that he might see Him, for He was about to pass through that way. And as He came upon the place, having looked up, Jesus19.5 BYZ and TR And as He came to that place, Jesus looked up and saw him, and said to him, “Zacchaeus, having hurried, come down, for it is necessary for Me to stay in your house today.” And having hurried, he came down and received Him, rejoicing. And having seen it, they were all grumbling, saying, “He entered to lodge with a sinful man.” But having stood, Zacchaeus said to the Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I give to the poor; and if I defrauded anything of anyone, I repay it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation came to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” The Parable of the Ten Minas (Matthew 25:14–30) Now in their hearing these things, having proceeded, He spoke a parable because of His being near Jerusalem and their thinking that the kingdom of God is about to appear immediately. Therefore He said, “A certain man of noble birth went to a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. And having called ten of his servants, he gave to them ten minas19.13 That is, he gave each servant one mina. A mina was most likely a silver coin worth a hundred drachmas, that is, about a hundred days’ wages. and said to them, ‘Do business until I come.’ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We are not willing for this man to reign over us.’ And it came to pass on his returning, having received the kingdom, that he directed these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, so that he might know what each had gained by doing business. And the first came up, saying, ‘Lord, your mina produced ten minas.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you were faithful in very little, be having authority over ten cities.’ And the second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, made five minas.’ And he said also to this one, ‘And you, be over five cities.’ And the other came, saying, ‘Master, behold your mina, which I had lying away in a soudario.19.20 That is, a piece of cloth or a handkerchief For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You take up what you did not lay down, and you reap what you did not sow.19.21 GOC includes and you gather where you scattered no seed.’ He says to him, ‘Out of your mouth I will judge you, evil servant. You knew that I am a harsh man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?19.22 GOC includes and gathering where I scattered no seed. And why did you not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, might have collected it with interest?’ And to those standing by he said, ‘Take from him the mina and give it to the one having the ten minas.’ And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ I say to you⁺ that to everyone having, it will be given; but from the one not having, even that which he has will be taken away.19.26 BYZ and TR include from him. However, these enemies of mine, those not having been willing for me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’” The Triumphal Entry (Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; John 12:12–19) And having said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. And it came to pass as He drew near to Bethphage19.29 Most MT Bethsphage and Bethany, toward the mount called Olivet,19.29 That is, the Mount of Olives that He sent two of the disciples, saying, “Go into the village ahead, in which, entering, you⁺ will find a colt tied, on which no one of men ever sat; and having loosed it, bring it. And if anyone may ask you⁺, ‘Why are you⁺ loosing it?’ thus you⁺ will say, ‘Because the Lord has need of it.’” And having gone away, those sent found it19.32 GOC found the colt standing there just as He said to them. And on their loosing the colt, its masters said to them, “Why are you⁺ loosing the colt?” And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” And they led it to Jesus, and having cast their garments on the colt, they put Jesus on it. And in His going, they were spreading their garments in the road. And in His drawing near, already at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples, rejoicing, began to praise God in a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying: “Blessed is the coming King in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”19.38 Psalm 118:26 19.38 See Psalm 148:1. And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!” And answering, He said, “I say to you⁺ that if these will be silent, the stones will cry out.” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem (Isaiah 29:1–16) And as He drew near, having seen the city, He wept over it, saying, “If you knew in this day, even you, the things for peace! But now they were hidden from your eyes. For the days will come upon you, and your enemies will cast around you a barricade, and they will surround you and will hem you in on every side. And they will level you to the ground, and your children in you, and they will not leave a stone upon a stone in you, because you did not know the season of your visitation.19.44 Or your visitation from God” Jesus Cleanses the Temple (Matthew 21:12–17; Mark 11:15–19; John 2:12–25) And having entered into the temple,19.45 Or the temple courts He began to cast out those selling,19.45 BYZ and TR include in it, and buying. saying to them, “It has been written: ‘And My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you⁺ made it ‘a den of robbers.19.46 Isaiah 56:7’” 19.46 Jeremiah 7:11 And He was teaching every day in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the foremost of the people were seeking to destroy Him. And they were not finding what they might do; for all the people were hanging on Him, hearing. Jesus’ Authority Challenged (Matthew 21:23–27; Mark 11:27–33) And it came to pass on one of the days, in His teaching the people in the temple20.1 Or the temple courts and proclaiming the gospel, that the chief priests20.1 BYZ the priests and the scribes came up with the elders, and they spoke to Him, saying, “Tell us by what authority You do these things, or who is the one having given You this authority?” And answering, He said to them, “I also will ask you⁺ a word,20.3 BYZ and TR one word and you⁺ tell Me: The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men?” And they reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we should say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why20.5 TR and GOC Why then did you⁺ not believe him?’ But if we should say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John is a prophet.” And they answered that they did not know from where. And Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you⁺ by what authority I do these things.” The Parable of the Wicked Tenants (Matthew 21:33–46; Mark 12:1–12) And He began to speak to the people this parable: “A certain man planted a vineyard, and he rented it out to farmers and traveled abroad a long time. And in the season, he sent a servant to the farmers, so that they will give to him from the fruit of the vineyard. But the farmers sent him away empty-handed, having beaten him. And he proceeded to send another servant, but having beaten and having dishonored that one also, they sent him away empty-handed. And he proceeded to send a third, and having wounded this one also, they cast him out. Then the lord of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.20.13 BYZ and TR include when they see him.’ But having seen him, the farmers were reasoning with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill20.14 BYZ and TR come, let us kill him, so that the inheritance might become ours.’ And having cast him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What, therefore, will the lord of the vineyard do to them? He will come and will destroy these farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.” And having heard, they said, “Never may it be!” But having looked at them, He said, “What then is this that has been written: ‘The stone that those building rejected, this became the head of the corner’? 20.17 Psalm 118:22 Everyone having fallen on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it might fall, it will grind him into powder.” Paying Taxes to Caesar (Matthew 22:15–22; Mark 12:13–17) And the scribes and the chief priests20.19 BYZ and TR the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on Him in that hour, and they feared the people.20.19 BYZ does not include the people. For they knew that He spoke this parable against them. And having closely watched, they sent spies feigning themselves to be righteous, so that they might catch Him in His word, so as to deliver Him to the rule and to the authority of the governor. And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach rightly and do not receive any person, but teach the way of God on the basis of truth. Is it lawful for us to give tax to Caesar or not?” But having perceived their craftiness, He said to them,20.23 BYZ and TR include Why do you test Me? “Show Me a denarius.20.24 A denarius was customarily a day’s wage for a laborer; see Matthew 20:2. Whose image and inscription does it have?” And they said, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Therefore give back the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God.” And they were not able to catch Him in His saying before the people. And having marveled at His answer, they were silent. The Sadducees and the Resurrection (Matthew 22:23–33; Mark 12:18–27) And some of the Sadducees, the ones denying there is a resurrection, having come, questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if anyone’s brother should die having a wife, and he should be childless, that his brother should take the wife and should raise up seed for his brother. 20.28 Deuteronomy 25:5 Therefore there were seven brothers. And the first, having taken a wife, died childless; and the second20.30 BYZ and TR include took her as wife, and he died childless. and the third took her; and likewise also the seven did not leave behind children and died. Finally the woman also died. Therefore, in the resurrection, the woman, of which of them does she become wife? For the seven had her as wife.” And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those having been considered worthy to obtain that which is to the age and the resurrection that is out from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage. For neither are they able to die anymore, for they are like angels, and they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. But that the dead are raised even Moses showed at the bush, as he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’ 20.37 Exodus 3:6 Now He is not the God of the dead but of the living, for all live to Him.” And answering, some of the scribes said, “Teacher, You spoke well!” For20.40 BYZ and TR And no longer did they dare to question Him anything. Whose Son Is the Christ? (Matthew 22:41–46; Mark 12:35–37) And He said to them, “How do they say the Christ is Son of David? For David himself says in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand 20.42 BYZ and TR And until I place Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”’20.43 Psalm 110:1 David therefore calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?” Beware of the Scribes (Mark 12:38–40) And all the people hearing, He said to His disciples,20.45 SBL and WH the disciples “Beware of the scribes, who are wanting to walk in long robes, and loving greetings in the marketplaces and first seats in the synagogues and first places at the suppers, who devour the houses of widows and pray at great length as a pretext. These will receive more abundant judgment.” 20.47 Or They defraud widows of their houses The Poor Widow’s Offering (Mark 12:41–44) And having looked up, He saw the ones casting their gifts into the treasury—the rich. And He saw a certain poor widow casting there two lepta.21.2 Or two small copper coins; a lepton was a Jewish coin of bronze or copper worth about 1/128 of a denarius. “And He said, “Truly I say to you⁺ that this poor widow cast in more than all. For these all cast in the gifts21.4 BYZ and TR include to God. out of that which is abounding to them, but she out of her lack cast in all the livelihood that she had.” Temple Destruction and Other Signs (Matthew 24:1–8; Mark 13:1–8) And some speaking about the temple, that it was adorned with goodly stones and consecrated gifts, He said, “These things that you⁺ are beholding, the days will come in which not a stone will be left upon a stone that will not be thrown down.” And they questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when, then, will these things be, and what is the sign when these things are about to happen?” And He said, “Take heed, lest you⁺ be led astray; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Do not21.8 BYZ and TR Therefore do not. go after them. And when you⁺ may hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for it is necessary for these things to happen first, but the end is not immediately.” Witnessing to All Nations (Matthew 24:9–14; Mark 13:9–13) Then He was saying to them, “Nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be also great earthquakes and famines and pestilences in various places.21.11 BYZ and TR great earthquakes in various places, and famines, and pestilences There will also be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. But before all these things, they will lay their hands upon you⁺ and will persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, leading you away before kings and governors on account of My name. It will result to you⁺ for a testimony. Settle, therefore, in your⁺ hearts not to premeditate to make a defense. For I will give you⁺ a mouth and wisdom, which all those opposing you⁺ will neither be able to resist nor contradict.21.15 BYZ and TR contradict nor resist And you⁺ will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends,21.16 BYZ and TR parents and relatives and friends and brothers and they will put to death some of you⁺. And you⁺ will be hated by all because of My name. And no, not a hair of your⁺ head shall perish. By your⁺ perseverance you⁺ will gain your⁺ souls. The Destruction of Jerusalem (Matthew 24:15–25; Mark 13:14–23) But when you⁺ shall see Jerusalem being encircled by encampments, then know that her desolation has drawn near. Then those in Judea, let them flee to the mountains; and those in her midst, let them depart; and those in the country, let them not enter into her. For these are the days of avenging, to fulfill all things having been written. Woe to those having in womb and to those nursing in those days! For21.23 GOC For at that time there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people. And they will fall by the mouth of the sword and will be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trodden down by the nations until the times of the nations are fulfilled. The Return of the Son of Man (Matthew 24:26–31; Mark 13:24–27) And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations with perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the rolling surge— men fainting from fear and expectation of the things coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 21.27 See Daniel 7:13–14. And these things beginning to come to pass, look up and lift up your⁺ heads, because your⁺ redemption draws near.” The Lesson of the Fig Tree (Matthew 24:32–35; Mark 13:28–31) And He spoke to them a parable: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees. When they already may cast forth, looking for yourselves you⁺ know that already the summer is near. So also you⁺, when you⁺ see these things coming to pass, know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you⁺ that this generation shall not pass away until all shall come to pass. The heaven and the earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. Be Watchful for the Day And take heed to yourselves, lest your⁺ hearts ever be burdened with dissipation and drunkenness and the cares of life—and that day would come upon you⁺ suddenly as a snare. For it will come upon all those sitting upon the face of all the earth. But stay awake in every season, praying that you⁺ may have strength21.36 BYZ and TR you may be deemed worthy to escape all these things that are about to come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” And during the day He was teaching in the temple, and in the evening, going out, He was lodging on the mount called Olivet.21.37 That is, the Mount of Olives And all the people were coming early to Him in the temple21.38 GOC on the mount to hear Him. The Plot to Kill Jesus (Matthew 26:1–5; Mark 14:1–2; John 11:45–57) And the Feast of the Unleavened,22.1 Or the Feast of Unleavened Bread; see Exodus 12:14–20. called the Passover, was drawing near. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might put Him to death, for they were afraid of the people. Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus (Matthew 26:14–16; Mark 14:10–11) And Satan entered into Judas, the one being called Iscariot, being of the number of the Twelve. And having gone away, he discussed with the chief priests22.4 GOC chief priests, scribes, and captains how he might betray Him to them. And they rejoiced and agreed to give him money. And he promised, and began seeking opportunity to betray Him to them apart from a crowd. Preparing the Passover (Matthew 26:17–19; Mark 14:12–16) And the day of the Unleavened came, on which it was necessary for the Passover to be sacrificed. And He sent Peter and John, having said, “Having gone, prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.” And they said to Him, “Where do You want that we should prepare?” And He said to them, “Behold, of you⁺ having entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you⁺. Follow him into the house into which he enters, and you⁺ will say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ And he will show you⁺ a large furnished upper room. Make preparations there.” And having gone, they found it as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover. The Last Supper (Matthew 26:20–30; Mark 14:17–26; 1 Corinthians 11:17–34) And when the hour was come, He reclined, and the apostles22.14 BYZ and TR the twelve apostles with Him. And He said to them, “With desire I desired to eat this Passover with you⁺ before I suffer. For I say to you⁺ that no longer will I eat thereof until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And having received a cup,22.17 GOC the cup having given thanks, He said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. For I say to you⁺ that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now until22.18 BYZ and TR of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come.” And having taken the bread, having given thanks, He broke it and gave to them, saying, “This is My body, which is given for you⁺; do this in remembrance of Me,” and the cup likewise, after the supping, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is being poured out for you⁺.22.20 Some manuscripts end verse 19 after This is My body and do not include verse 20. But, behold, the hand of him betraying Me is with Me on the table. For indeed, the Son of Man goes according to that having been determined. But woe to that man by whom He is betrayed.” And they began to question among themselves who then it might be of them who is about to do this. Who Is the Greatest? And there was also a dispute among them as to which of them is thought to be the greatest. And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles rule over them, and those exercising authority over them are called benefactors. But you⁺ shall not be thus. Rather, the greatest among you⁺, let him be as the younger, and the one leading as the one serving. For who is greater, the one reclining or the one serving? Is it not the one reclining? But I am in your⁺ midst as the One serving. Now you⁺ are those having remained with Me in My trials. And I appoint to you⁺ a kingdom, as My Father appointed to Me, so that you⁺ may eat and may drink at My table in My kingdom,22.30 BYZ does not include in My kingdom. and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial (Matthew 26:31–35; Mark 14:27–31; John 13:36–38) Simon, Simon,22.31 BYZ and TR And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked for all of you⁺ to sift like wheat. But I begged for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” And he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death.” But He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not22.34 BYZ and TR will certainly not crow today until22.34 BYZ and TR before you shall deny three times knowing Me.” And He said to them, “When I sent you⁺ without purse and bag and sandals, did you⁺ lack anything?” And they said, “Nothing.” And He said to them, “But now, the one having a purse, let him take it, and likewise a bag; and the one having no sword, let him sell his cloak and buy one. For I say to you⁺ that this which has been written, it is necessary to be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was reckoned with the lawless.’22.37 BYZ and TR include yet. For also the things concerning Me have an end.” 22.37 Isaiah 53:12 And they said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.” Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives (Matthew 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42) And having gone out, He went according to the custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples22.39 BYZ and TR His disciples also followed Him. And having come to the place, He said to them, “Pray not to enter into temptation.” And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and having fallen on the knees, He was praying, saying, “Father, if You are willing, take away this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours, be done.” And an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And having been in agony, He was praying more earnestly. And His sweat became like large drops of blood falling down upon the ground.22.44 Some manuscripts do not include verses 43 and 44. And having risen up from the prayer, having come to the disciples,22.45 Scrivener TR His disciples He found them sleeping from the grief. And He said to them, “Why are you⁺ sleeping? Having risen up, pray that you⁺ might not enter into temptation.” The Betrayal of Jesus (Matthew 26:47–56; Mark 14:43–52; John 18:1–14) In His still speaking, behold, a crowd, and he who is called Judas, one of the Twelve, was going before them, and he drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.22.47 F35 and GOC include for he had given them this sign: “Whomever I kiss, He is the One.” And Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” And those around Him, having seen what would be, said,22.49 BYZ and TR include to Him. “Lord, will we strike with the sword?” And a certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus, answering, said, “Permit only as far as this!” And having touched the ear, He healed him. And Jesus said to those having come out against Him, the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, “Have you⁺ come out with swords and clubs as against a robber? Every day of My being with you⁺ in the temple,22.53 Or the temple courts you⁺ did not stretch out the hands against Me; but this is your⁺ hour, and that of the power of the darkness.” Peter Denies Jesus (Matthew 26:69–75; Mark 14:66–72; John 18:15–18) And having seized Him, they led Him away and led Him into the house of the high priest. And Peter was following afar off. And on their having kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and having sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. And a certain servant girl, having seen him sitting by the light and having looked intently on him, said, “This one also was with Him.” But he denied it,22.57 BYZ and TR he denied Him saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.” And after a little, having seen him, another was saying, “You also are of them.” But Peter was saying, “Man, I am not.” And about one hour having elapsed, a certain other strongly affirmed it, saying, “Of a truth, this one also was with Him; for he is also a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you say.” And immediately in his still speaking, a rooster crowed. 22.60 TR the rooster And having turned, the Lord looked at Peter. The Soldiers Mock Jesus (Isaiah 50:4–11; Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; John 19:1–15) And the men who are holding Him began mocking Him, beating Him. And having blindfolded Him,22.64 BYZ and TR include they were striking Him on the face, and. they were questioning Him, saying, “Prophesy, who is the one having struck You?” And they were saying many other things to Him, blaspheming. Jesus before the Sanhedrin (Matthew 26:57–68; Mark 14:53–65; John 18:19–24) And when it was day, the elderhood of the people were gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him into their Council,22.66 Or their Sanhedrin saying, “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I should tell you⁺, you⁺ would not believe, and if I should ask you, you⁺ would not answer.22.68 BYZ and TR include Me nor release Me. For we ourselves heard it from His mouth.” Jesus before Pilate (Matthew 27:11–14; John 18:28–40) And having risen up, all the multitude of them led Him to Pilate. And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation23.2 BYZ and TR the nation and forbidding taxes to be given to Caesar, and declaring Himself to be Christ, a King.” And Pilate questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And answering him, He was saying, “You say.” And Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” But they kept insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, and He has begun from Galilee even to here.” Jesus before Herod And Pilate, having heard,23.6 BYZ and TR include of Galilee. asked whether the man is a Galilean. And having learned that He is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent Him up to Herod, he himself being also in Jerusalem in those days. And Herod, having seen Jesus, was exceedingly glad; for of a long time he is wanting to see Him, because of hearing23.8 BYZ and TR include many things. concerning Him; and he was hoping to see some sign done by Him. And he kept questioning Him in many words, but He answered him nothing. And the chief priests and the scribes23.10 GOC the scribes and the chief priests had been standing by, vehemently accusing Him. And Herod, with his troops, having treated Him with contempt and also having mocked Him, having put on Him splendid apparel, sent Him back to Pilate. And both Herod and Pilate23.12 BYZ and TR Pilate and Herod became friends with one another on that day; for previously they were at enmity between themselves. The Crowd Chooses Barabbas (Matthew 27:15–23; Mark 15:6–11) And Pilate, having called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, said to them, “You⁺ brought to me this man as one misleading the people; and behold, having examined Him before you⁺, I found nothing in this man guilty of that accusation you⁺ are bringing against Him— no, nor even Herod, for he sent Him back to us.23.15 BYZ and TR for I sent you back to him And behold, nothing worthy of death is done by Him. I found no cause of death in Him. Therefore having chastised Him, I will release Him.” But they were urgent, asking with loud voices for Him to be crucified. And their voices23.23 BYZ and TR include and those of the chief priests. were prevailing. And Pilate sentenced their demand to be done. And he released23.25 TR released for them; GOC released for them Barabbas the one having been cast into prison on account of insurrection and murder, whom they had asked for; and Jesus he delivered up to their will. The Crucifixion (Psalm 22:1–31; Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; John 19:16–27) And as they led Him away, having laid hold on Simon, a certain man of Cyrene coming from the country, they put upon him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And a great multitude of the people were following Him, and of women who were mourning and lamenting for Him. But having turned to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your⁺ children. For behold, the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never did bear, and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then ‘they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall upon us,” and to the hills, “Cover us.”’ 23.30 Hosea 10:8 For if they do these things in the green tree, what might happen in the dry?” And two other criminals also were being led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place called The Skull,23.33 Greek Kranion; Vulgate Calvariae, rendered in some translations as Calvary there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and one on the left hand. And Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they cast lots, dividing His garments.23.34 Some manuscripts do not include And Jesus was saying, “Father... what they do.” 23.34 See Psalm 22:18. And the people stood, looking on. And the rulers also were deriding Him,23.35 BYZ and TR include with them; see Psalm 22:7. saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God,23.35 BYZ and TR the Christ, the Chosen One the Chosen One.” And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming near, offering Him sour wine23.36 Or offering Him wine vinegar and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” And there was also an inscription over Him:23.38 BYZ and TR include written in Greek and Latin and Hebrew; see John 19:20. THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the criminals having been hanged was railing at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself23.39 BYZ and TR If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us!” But the other, answering, was rebuking him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same judgment, and we indeed justly? For we are receiving back things worthy of what we did, but this man did nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me23.42 BYZ and TR was saying to Jesus, “Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your kingdom!” And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.23.43 See 2 Corinthians 12:4 and Revelation 2:7.” The Death of Jesus (Psalm 31:1–24; Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; John 19:28–30) And now it was about the sixth hour,23.44 That is, noon and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour,23.44 That is, three in the afternoon the sun having darkened,23.45 Or having failed or having been obscured; BYZ and TR having become dark and the veil of the temple was torn in the middle. The Burial of Jesus (Isaiah 53:9–12; Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; John 19:38–42) And behold, a man named Joseph, being also a Council member, a good and righteous man— he was not having consented to their counsel and deed—from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who23.51 BYZ and TR include also himself. was waiting for the kingdom of God, he, having gone to Pilate, asked for the body of Jesus. And having taken it down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in a rock, in which no one yet was laid. And having returned, they prepared spices and anointing oils. And they rested indeed on the Sabbath according to the commandment. And having returned from the tomb, they related all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who were saying these things to the apostles. But Peter, having risen up, ran to the tomb, and having stooped down, he sees only the linen strips.24.12 BYZ and TR include lying there. And it came to pass, in their talking and reasoning, that Jesus Himself, having drawn near, was walking along with them. But their eyes were held not to know Him. But we were hoping it is He who is about to redeem Israel. But indeed also with all these things, this brings24.21 BYZ and TR today brings the third day away from which these things came to pass. But also, certain women out from us astonished us. Having been to the tomb early this morning24.22 BYZ and TR early and not having found His body, they came declaring to have also seen a vision of angels, who say He is alive. But Him they did not see.” And He said to them, “O foolish and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” And having begun from Moses and from all the Prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. And they drew near to the village where they were going, and He appeared to be going farther. And they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and now the day has declined.” And He entered in to abide with them. And it came to pass, in His reclining with them, having taken the bread, that He blessed it; and having broken it, He began giving it to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew Him. And He, being seen, vanished from them. And they said to one another, “Was not our heart burning within us24.32 WH does not include within us. as He was speaking with us on the road, as He was opening the Scriptures to us?” And having risen up that same hour, they returned to Jerusalem. And they found the Eleven and those with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and He has appeared to Simon!” And they began relating the things on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread. Jesus Appears to the Disciples (John 20:19–23; 1 John 1:1–4) And in their telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and says to them, “Peace to you⁺.24.36 SBL does not include and says, “Peace be with you.”” But having been terrified, and having been filled with fear, they were thinking themselves to see a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you⁺ troubled, and why do doubts come up in your⁺ hearts? See My hands and My feet, that I am He. Touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you⁺ see Me having.” And having said this, He showed to them the hands and the feet. And in their still disbelieving from joy and wondering, He said to them, “Have you⁺ anything here to eat?” And they gave to Him part of a broiled fish.24.42 BYZ and TR include and some honeycomb. And it came to pass, in His blessing them, that He was separated from them and was carried up into heaven.
